The project

In recent years the evolution of services and technologies related to telecommunications has received great impetus from the pressing request by users, of increasingly rich and heterogeneous content: the need to integrate information of a different nature – voice, images and data – in a single flow of information usable through a multiplicity of different technological solutions, has given rise to a new type of communication, whose peculiarities are summarized in the multimedia attribute.

The creation of a modern heterogeneous telecommunications network, able to efficiently manage new multimedia services, is today the new frontier of the research world in this sector.

As part of the three-year applied research project “Multimediality – Interactive Multimedia Network of Access to the User”, funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, implemented by the National Research Council and coordinated at national level by Prof. Oreste Andrisano, technologies and related applications have been studied to face this challenge, with particular reference to radio, satellite and fiber optic communications.

The project has seen the participation of numerous university research units and the CNR, supported by some of the leading companies active in the sectors of services and multimedia communications, among which we mention Siemens Mobile and Marconi Communications.

The urban and peri-urban areas of the country are increasingly congested with traffic resulting in an increase in accidents, slowdowns, atmospheric and noise pollution, the number of motorists looking for parking spaces that are not always available, or who face restrictions / restrictions access to historical centers. The whole of these phenomena has a negative impact both from the point of view of the economic and social development of the country.

The objective of PEGASUS (Mobility Management Project Through Infotelematic Systems for the Urban area, for the Safety of Passengers, Vehicles and Goods) is, therefore, the creation of an integrated infotelematic platform that is the enabling element of a systemic approach to the sustainable and safe management of flows of people, vehicles and goods within urban areas.
In particular, the platform will be based on the collection and processing in real time of data from vehicles, infrastructures and their interactions and will exploit them for better management of mobility in urban and peri-urban areas.
A brief overview of the PEGASUS objectives and the expected innovations from the implementation of the Infotelematic Platform are shown below and subdivided according to the reference area, taking into account that the final result will be the result of the interaction of all the strategic actions of industrial innovation. of the system project.

VICom – Virtual Immersive Communications

The project VICom (Virtual Immersive Communications) is a FIRB project (Italian Fund for Basic Research), funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), which took place from 2002 to 2006.

It participates at the IEIIT-BO / CNR (Institute of Electronics and Information Engineering and Telecommunications Council, Section of Bologna), some universities of the CNIT (National Inter-university Consortium for Telecommunications), and entities such as Telecom Italy Learning Services and the Istituto Superiore delle Comunicazioni.

The VICom project aims to investigate the enabling technologies for Virtual Immersive Telepresence services that rely on integrated networks of different nature, such as radio sensor networks, ad hoc networks and 2.5G and 3G mobile radio networks.
The VIT (Virtual Immersive Telepresence) consists of the set of techniques that allow the user to interact with the environment and with other users, in order to obtain information from the context, exchange relevant data and access various types of services.

In addition to basic and advanced research topics, one of the main objectives of the project is the realization of two demonstrators of immersive technologies, with particular emphasis on the use of wireless and network technologies:

  • Demonstrator “Mobility in Immersive Environments” (MIE) for smart indoor and outdoor scenarios, both pedestrian and vehicular, in which the user exchanges information with the environment.
  • “Virtual Immersive Learning” (VIL) demonstrator for teledidattica scenarios and collaborative work.
